Georgia Unemployment Rate Up In August

ATLANTA, Ga. - State labor officials say metro Atlanta's unemployment rate has risen to 10.4 percent in August.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Atlanta is up one-tenth of a percentage point from 10.3 percent in July.

Officials said the jobless rate increased because there were more layoffs in construction, trade, administrative and support services, and accommodation and food services.

The jobless rate in metro Atlanta in August a year ago was also 10.4 percent.

Authorities announced earlier this month that statewide, Georgia's jobless rate rose to 10.2 percent in August, the highest level in the past six months.
