Georgia man Brian Keith Terrell executed for 1992 killing
Brian Keith Terrell, 47, was executed by the state of Georgia Wednesday moing.
Terrell was convicted for the 1992 murder of his mother's friend John Watson. Terrell reportedly forged checks belonging to Watson, then killed him after he demanded the money back.
The murder happened in Covington, Georgia, roughly 35 miles east of Atlanta. Terrell was sentenced in 2001.
Terrell was executed at a prison in Jackson, Georgia, almost one hour from Atlanta.
According to prosecutors, Terrell was on parole in 1992 when he stole 10 of Watson's checks and signed his name on some, an Associated Press report said.
Watson elected not to press charges if a majority of the money was retued in two days.
Terrell murdered Watson instead of retuing the money. His mother and his lawyers maintained his innocence.
A clemency request was denied by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles Monday.
A state court on Tuesday dismissed a complaint in which Terrell claimed innocence, and the state Supreme Court declined to halt the execution, according to The Associated Press.
The United States Supreme Court denied Terrell's final appeal late Tuesday night, clearing the way for the execution to proceed.
Terrell's last meal consisted of chicken and rice, beans, rutabagas, tuip greens and cobread, according to the Atlanta Joual-Constitution.
The execution is the state's fifth by lethal injection this year, according to the AJC.
Lawyers posed questions about the drug used in the execution as previous samples had been unfit for use, multiple reports said.
The pharmacist has a 50 percent success rate, according to court filings obtained by the AJC.
The statement from the Corrections Department said Terrell accepted a final prayer and refused to record a final statement.
