FORSYTH, Ga. - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has identified a 16-year-old who drowned in Lake Juliette as Joseph Conyor Davenport of Perry.

The sheriff's office says Davenport was fishing with his family and friends at a boat ramp on Sunday.

Sheriff's officers say the teen tried to swim across a cove when he panicked and went under.

They say witnesses tried to rescue the teen and called 911. The Bibb County Dive Team recovered the body about 7 p.m.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is expected to do an autopsy.
