Fulton County Judge Cynthia Wright Defends Court After Trooper'S Death

ATLANTA - Fulton County's top judge says a criminal court was just following the law when it released a repeat offender who weeks later was charged with gunning down a Georgia state trooper.

Superior Court Chief Judge Cynthia Wright said in a letter Monday that court officials were forced to release Gregory Favors on Dec. 13 because there was no warrant and testimony from an arresting officer at his court appearance.

Favors is charged in the Dec. 27 shooting death of Georgia State Patrol Trooper Chadwick LeCroy during a traffic stop. City officials want to suspend the criminal court that heard the case.

Wright's letter said Favors' release was "not the result of judicial whim or an adherence to some arbitrary self-imposed rule" but rather out of a duty to uphold Georgia law.
