Police say a Fort Valley State University student has died after he was fatally stabbed on campus Tuesday afteoon

Donnell M. Phelps, 19, was a freshman from Marshallville majoring in agriculture engineering technology, Campus Safety Police Chief Kenneth Morgan said in a press release.

The suspect, who has not been identified, also stabbed Security Officer Eest Johnson while trying to flee the scene. He was taken into custoody a short time later

Fort Valley State campus police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are handling the investigation.

GBI Special Agent in Charge J.T. Ricketson says they are questioning witnesses and analyzing the scene to figure out the circumstances surrounding what happened.

Fort Valley State University president Dr. Paul Jones released a statement:

"I am deeply saddened by the senseless violence that has led to the tragic death of one of our students," Jones said. " My heart and the hearts of the entire Fort Valley State University community go out to the Phelps family.  We likewise are conceed for the families of all other persons involved in this terrible event."

"We will do what families do in times of loss, we will gather together to support each other through this extremely difficult time," he said. "We will focus on ensuring that our students and our campus community have the support they need. Please keep our entire campus in your thoughts and prayers."
