Forsyth County authorities have arrested 28-year-old Michael Scott Whelchel after SWAT teams were sent to a home following a call about a woman being held hostage.

Authorities say the ex-girlfriend of 28-year-old Michael Scott Whelchel -- who lived at the home -- called authorities after he called her they say, saying that he apparently was ready to take his own life and that of his current live-in girlfriend.

SWAT teams responded to a home on Burruss Mill Road in northe Forsyth County at around 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police say they negotiated with Whelchel for hours. They say their break came when Whelchel separated himself from his hostage and SWAT took action with an explosive device around the front door.

Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton says Whelchel was tasered when SWAT teams entered the home.

Whelchel is currently being held in the Forsyth County Jail. He faces charges of making terroristic threats and false imprisonment. They say Whelchel has a previous arrest for family violence and cruelty to children.

The hostage was taken to an area hospital to be checked medically and is said to be ok.
