Deputies caught a suspected thief this moing after he impaled himself on a fence surrounding the Richmond County Board of Education building, according to Sgt. Blaise Dresser.

A construction worker spotted the suspect, Alfred Lee Dennis, 41, homeless, breaking into his vehicle in the 600 block of Greene Street shortly after midnight. The construction worker and his co-workers chased Dennis around downtown on foot, while Dennis dropped a trail of loot taken from the vehicle, Dresser said.

After running through the Board of Education parking deck, at James Brown Boulevard and Ellis Street, Dennis jumped and impaled his leg on the fence, Dresser said.

Deputies who arrived on the scene supported Dennis' dangling body while they waited for the fire department to respond and remove a portion of the fence.

Dresser said Dennis was transported to the hospital with a portion of the removed fence still in his leg.

Dennis was charged with entering a vehicle to commit theft.
