Fireplace Ashes Suspected Cause For Bethlehem House Fire
BETHLEHEM, Ga. - As cold weather sweeps across Georgia, firefighters in Barrow County are waing people to use caution when discarding ashes from fireplaces. The waing comes after a fire apparently started by discarded ashes destroyed a home in Bethlehem.
Barrow County firefighters told The Athens Banner-Herald that the fire Sunday at the Bethlehem home started after a resident apparently put fireplace ashes in a box on a back deck.
The five members of the family living in the home escaped without injury.
Fire department spokesman Lt. Scott Dakin told the newspaper that the ashes apparently started the fire on the deck and it spread to the house.
