Authorities say a Marietta firefighter has died of a medical issue he experienced after collapsing as firefighters worked to help an injured motorist.

The Marietta Fire Department said in a statement that Lonnie Nutt, a firefighter engineer, was responding to a car accident around 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Whitlock Avenue.

When firefighters arrived and began to assist an injured patient, Nutt fell to the ground with a medical issue. He was taken to Kennestone Hospital, where he died.

The fire department statement doesn't specify what type of medical issue Nutt had, but Marietta Fire Marshal Scott Tucker told WSB Radio that he appeared to have suffered a massive heart attack.

Nutt began his career in Marietta in 1994 and served as a firefighter, inspector, investigator and firefighter engineer.
