Fire Destroys Teaver Road Baptist Church in Troup County
A fire at Teaver Road Baptist Church in Troup County destroyed their nearly 40-year-old sanctuary on Sunday morning just hours before weekly services were set to begin.

More than 50 firefighters battled a fire that destroyed a Lagrange church Sunday moing.

According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, the main sanctuary of the Teaver Road Baptist Church was destroyed by the fire.

Firefighters from Troup County and the city of Lagrange arrived just after 7 a.m.

"It blew up into a bubble and sucked back in. It happened in 10 seconds," neighbor Terry Maddox said.

No one was inside the church at the time of the fire. Parishioners who arrived at the church said they're thankful no one was hurt, but it hurts to see their beloved sanctuary go up in flames.

"Oh lord, it's emotional. Just to see all of this. It's just terrible," parishioner Frankie Holmes said.

Teaver Road was shut down as firefighters continued to battle the blaze for several hours.

The church is located at 215 Teaver Road, off West Point Road.

Troup County Fire Department Chief Jerry Heard said the sanctuary is a total loss, but they were able to save nearby buildings.

"We did a good job cutting it off and protecting the family life center in the back," Heard said.

Power crews worked to get electricity back to the family center so church members would have somewhere to worship Sunday moing.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
