Feds Charge 71 in Ga. with Gun, Drug Trafficking

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Federal and state investigators have charged 71 people in the Augusta area with firearm and drug trafficking offenses after an 18-month undercover investigation.

The investigation, dubbed ”Operation Fox Hunt, was unsealed Tuesday in federal court. Authorities have charged 51 defendants with firearm, drug and other federal offenses. Another 20 people were charged by Richmond County authorities on related state firearm and drug charges.

The investigation was launched in August 2009, and undercover officers purchased or recovered more than 192 firearms and approximately $75,000 worth of illegal drugs.

They say many of the individuals charged with selling firearms and drugs were convicted felons, and that a number of the guns purchased by the officers were reported stolen.
