Family members believe a man had a mental breakdown before shooting his 16-year-old sister to death.

Marquaris Oglesby, 27, is in the DeKalb County Jail one day after police say he shot Ashley Oglesby multiple times in their duplex on Greenhaven Drive.

Family members told reporters Marquaris Oglesby was not in the right frame of mind when he grabbed a gun walked into his sister's bedroom and opened fire Thursday moing.

”His mom said she woke up (and) he was standing over her in the bedroom. (He) said somebody was chasing him and the guy was shooting him and he shot back, and I guess it hit his sister, said their aunt Sherry Morton.

Their mother witnessed the shooting, according to officers.

Ashley was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The family say they think her brother had some sort of mental illness and that he loved his sister.

”He cherished the ground she walked on, that's why I know something happened. He made sure she had anything she wanted: shoes, clothes. He loved his sister, Morton said.

The family said the gun was registered to Marquaris Oglesby and he has no known history of mental illness. They also don’t think he's entirely aware of the fact that his sister is dead.

Oglesby has been charged with murder.
