Family member recognizes woman on police Facebook page as alleged shoplifter Bethany Shirley

Police said a woman's family member recognized her after police in Carrollton posted surveillance video on Facebook of two alleged shoplifters.

Carrollton Police Department is using Facebook to catch criminals by posting surveillance video online.

The department said it has solved between 50 and 100 cases using Facebook posts.

Officers said often times they get tips seconds after posting crimes.

Police said most of the cases involve shoplifting, but they have successfully solved missing persons and armed robbery cases using the tactic.

Officer Glenn Lyle said an alleged shoplifter, Bethany Shirley, tued herself in after police posted video of her and another lady allegedly stealing items in a Belk store in Carrollton.

Officer Lyle said the other woman has not been caught.
