Ex-volunteer fire chief Todd Christopher accused of theft
A former Cherokee County volunteer fire chief was arrested Friday and charged with stealing checks intended for firefighters.
Todd Christopher, 36, who resigned a week ago as chief of the Holbrook Campground volunteer fire unit, was charged with three counts of forgery, one count of identity fraud and four counts of theft by taking, said Cherokee Sheriff's spokesman Howard J. Baker. Christopher was arrested by sheriff's deputies and is being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center on $35,744 bond.
Christopher is accused of forging and cashing stipend checks that he was supposed to distribute to four volunteer firefighters at the station where he served as treasurer, Baker said. There were three checks for $380 each, a total of $1,520.
The investigation began two weeks ago when the volunteer fire department's board of directors reported that money was missing, Baker said. The sheriff’s office and county emergency services department began an investigation that led to Christopher's arrest Friday moing, Baker said.
