Gilmer High School students received an unscheduled day off Wednesday when an envelope containing a white powder was discovered.

The Gilmer County schools superintendent said the envelope was found before students began arriving at the school.

HAZMAT and fire crews were called out to the scene to investigate.

The superintendent said since the investigation could take several hours, the decision was made to close the school for the day. The school was already getting a late start due to the winter weather.

A similar incident Tuesday happened at City Hall in Ellijay.
