Deal Signs Legislation Targeting Atlanta Schools
ATLANTA, Ga. - Gov. Nathan Deal says he has signed a bill that gives him the power to oust members of the troubled Atlanta Public School board.
Deal made the announcement on Wednesday at an appearance before the Atlanta Press Club.
Deal said he is hopeful he won't need to use the power and that the board will solve its problems without him intervening. But he said the school system's troubles bring "no credit to our state."
The 50,000-student Atlanta school system is facing a possible loss of accreditation because of infighting on the board and a high-profile test cheating scandal. The new law also shrinks the DeKalb County school board from nine members to seven.
