Nathan Deal: More State Government Employees Layoffs Coming

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Gov.-elect Nathan Deal says layoffs of state govement employees will be needed to balance the state budget.

In a speech on Wednesday to a luncheon sponsored by Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, Deal said the state must shrink its 104,000-person workforce.

Afterward, Deal told reporters that "I think you will see a downsizing starting with the executive branch agency."

Georgia is staring down an estimated $1.8 billion shortfall in next year's budget as federal stimulus money runs out. Deal said personnel costs are among the state's largest expenses.

So far, state govement layoffs have been limited in Georgia. The state has mainly eliminated vacant positions and forced employees to take unpaid furlough days to cope with the budget crunch.
