CAU Shooting Suspect Matthew Wells Faces New Charges
Matthew Wells walked into court Saturday -- facing additional charges -- after police said he and another man got into a shootout involving two Clark Atlanta University police officers.
The additional charges included gun possession counts and giving false information to law enforcement.
"Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and concealed weapon without a license," the judge told Wells.
A judge sets bond for Wells at $10,000 saying he should never have had a gun because of a prior felony conviction in Florida.
The incident with wells and police started Tuesday afteoon. Police said they found Wells and an unidentified man pointing weapons at each other near the CAU campus. Shots between police and the two armed men were fired.
Investigators said the unidentified man was hit and taken to the hospital. Wells was taken into custody.
Less than 24 hours later, Wells was gone. Atlanta police said he escaped a holding cell at their new headquarters. Part of the escape was captured on surveillance video.
"How did you get out?" asked FOX 5 reporter Morse Diggs. "I picked the lock," said Wells.
He was recaptured Thursday.
Atlanta police now say the door in their brand new building -- built by city hall -- had a faulty lock.
"Investigators thought he was in a secure location, and that shouldn't have been a problem but again the whole thing is under investigation. I can't say did someone do something wrong, was it against procedure until we have looked at everything," said one police official.
City hall officials are responsible for the construction of the police headquarters. They met with police Saturday and told detectives all doors to the interview rooms can be retrofitted.
