Newnan teen drowned saving 6-year-old sister, family says

Carroll County Officials said a teenager is dead and a 6-year-old girl is in intensive care after being rescued from the Chattahoochee River.

Alyson Calhoun, 14, a freshman at Newnan High School drowned in the area of the McIntosh Reserve Park in Carroll County Friday afteoon.

Carroll County Sheriff Captain Jeff Richards told reporters that the two girls, ages 6 and 14, were on ‘noodle’ floatation devices in the river when they went under. A man flagged down a nearby park ranger for help.

Crews were able to pull both the girls from the water and perform CPR at the scene.

The teen, Alyssa Calhoun, from Lake Circle in Newnan was rushed to Tanner Medical Center where she later died. The 6-year-old girl was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. She remained in the ICU department late Friday night.
