Capitol Police Officer Shooting Suspect Identified as Joseph Brian Gibbs
The man who allegedly fired a shot that hit a Capitol police officer on Wednesday has been identified. Authorities say the alleged gunman is Joseph Brian Gibbs, and they say he had outstanding arrest warrants in Florida.
Gibbs, 39, is accused of shooting the officer, 28-year-old Mark Edge, on Wednesday in downtown Atlanta. The shooting happened when Officer Edge was responding to a report of a stolen motorcycle, and he had come to the aid of Georgia State Patrol Sergeant Marvin Prince.
Authorities say Edge was grazed by a bullet, and one of the suspects was also hit. Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where the suspect is recovering after surgery.
In addition to identifying Gibbs, police say 29-year-old Bill Hendrix was arrested Wednesday on an outstanding warrant out of Fayette County. Authorities say Hendrix did not fire at the officer, but he was one of two men arrested near the scene of the shooting. The second man was released later.
The building where the shootout took place contained numerous motorcycles and authorities suspect it may be a chop shop. State police are investigating. The shooting is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Georgia Newsday leaed that Gibbs is a motorcycle racer who raced under the name Brian J. Gibbs.
Authorities in Volusia County, Florida said Gibbs had an outstanding warrant for a 2009 motorcycle theft charge, and he was also booked on a minor drug possession charge in 2004.
Gibbs is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
