The district attoey says a man who was to stand trial for murder in the shooting death of his live-in girlfriend will serve 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Multiple news outlets report 38-year-old Jermaine Javon Thomas was charged with shooting 33-year-old Casey Nicole Mitchell after a fight at their mobile home on Blythe Island in April 2014. The couple lived with Mitchell's four children.

Thomas pleaded guilty Tuesday in Brunswick to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery among other charges.

The judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison and ordered he serve 28 years and the rest on probation.

The family agreed to the plea as a way to spare two of Mitchell's children, who were in the home during the shooting, from testifying.
