DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- Douglasville police say a woman who was supposed to set an example for Boy Scouts, stole from them.

Jaleen Walters, the treasurer for Douglasville Boy Scout pack 30, was arrested and charged with stealing about $2,000 the troop of first-graders raised.

Channel 2’s Diana Davis went to the woman’s home Thursday to ask her about it. Walters answered the door, but refused to talk about the charges.

Douglasville police said troop leaders first called police in December to report suspicious activity in their bank accounts. Checks the troop wrote for legitimate purposes started to bounce.

Police said Walters used the troop’s money to write checks to her landlord, even pay utility and cable bills. Sometimes, they said, she signed her own name or forged signatures.

Police told Davis some in the community are shocked. ”Most of the people I've talked to are pretty shocked that somebody would obviously take money would be in such a desperate situation that they would take money from a Boy Scout troop, said Captain J.R. Davidson of the Douglasville police.

The father of a young boy who lives just down the street from Walters, told Davis he is disappointed.

”That’s very disheartening. To be one of the leaders of the kids and you are doing that for your own personal gain, said Marcus Eason.

Police told Davis they delayed arresting Walters until she delivered a baby a couple of weeks ago.

No one from the troop or the Boy Scouts would talk to Davis on camera.

They did tell her over the phone that some community members are raising money to replace the funds stolen form the troop.
