Authorities probe Price Middle School shooting
Authorities continue to investigate the shooting of a 14-year-old boy at an Atlanta middle school. Telvis Douglas was shot in the neck at Price Middle School allegedly by another student.
Anxious families waited near the school on Thursday afteoon following a shooting on campus. The school was locked down and parents waited for two hours to be reunited with their children.
"When it's at your own doorstep, you understand what a parent goes through not knowing if their child is ok. But now that I have my child in my arms I am truly relieved," said parent Yolanda Ponder.
Another parent, Bonita Glover, commended school authorities for locking the middle school down and keeping the kids safe.
Some of those kids described hearing the commotion and scrambling for safety.
Student Ramona Pitts said she was going under her desk when the teacher said to stay under the desk since it "would keep us safe"
Douglas' family rushed to Grady Hospital where he was treated for a wound to the back of the neck.
"His mother's being strong for him. The family is being strong for her. All around the situation, its terrible that things like this are happening in the schools and maybe this will be a wakeup call for some people to do something better about their kids," said the victim's aunt, Keonia Clark.
Douglas' cousin, Sandra Armour, said the teen was doing well.
Another student was arrested for the shooting by a school resource officer. School administrators are working to figure out how the incident happened.
"We wanted to make sure all of our safety and security procedures were followed. There is nothing more important to us than the safety and security of our students," said Atlanta Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis.
Davis says parents can expect additional security at the school on Friday. The school system will also have counselors on hand for students, staff and parents.
The school does have a metal detector but it is not known why the detector did not pick up the weapon inside the school.
