Authorities say the girl's uncle, Larenzo Montgomery, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in connection with the death of 3-year-old Takira Garlington. They say Montgomery was in possession of a handgun when the gun was unintentionally fired.

”This incident appears to have been the result of some type of accident. However, we’re still considering every possibility, said Atlanta Lt. Paul Guerrucci.

The girl was with her mother visiting her grandmother’s home in southwest Atlanta on Cushman Circle when the tragedy happened. The girl was shot in the stomach and later died at Grady Hospital.

Guerrucci said on Wednesday there were four adults inside the home at the time the little girl was shot. All four were taken to APD headquarters for questioning.

Homicide investigators collected evidence from the home, ballistics dogs searched for shell casings. One crucial piece of evidence was discovered.

”We did in fact locate a handgun which we believe was used during the shooting, said Lt. Paul Guerrucci of the Atlanta Police Department.

Atlanta police said they are checking with the ATF to see who the gun is registered to.
