MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A Marietta couple has been charged in the death of their 5-year-old son, who died Wednesday after spending several days on life support, authorities said.

Cobb County deputies were called about 6 p.m. Sunday to a home in the 400 block of Ramona Street after the boy was found unresponsive, Marietta police said. The child’s parents told 911 they had been performing CPR when first responders arrived and took over life-saving efforts. The boy was initially taken to Kennestone Hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Atlanta, where he was placed on life support. He was pronounced dead about 11 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Detectives charged Alexiss Eitrem, 31, with five counts of second-degree cruelty to children. Michael Horn, 31, faces counts of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, first-degree cruelty to children and four counts of second-degree cruelty to children. Both were booked into the Cobb County Jail.

The Cobb County Division of Family and Children Services has taken custody of the couple’s four other children. Authorities have not released details about what led to the boy becoming unresponsive or the cause of his death
