Atlanta police say they have charged the mother of a 3-year-old child who was shot Thursday night.

Angel Douglas, 22, was arrested Friday and has been charged with cruelty to children in the second degree and reckless conduct, according to the Atlanta Police Department. Douglas remains in the Fulton County Jail.

Police say the 3-year-old boy in critical condition after he shot himself in the face.

The incident happened at an apartment complex on 2973 Middleton Road.

Neighbors tell Georgia Newsday they heard one to two gunshots fired off.

Police say one adult was in the home when the incident occurred. Police believe the child was in a room alone when he got his hands on the gun.

According to police, it's not clear yet who the gun belongs to, but they think the child was playing with the weapon.

Police have not indicated if anyone will be charged.
