CARROLLTON, Ga. — Authorities have arrested a suspect in the deadly shooting of a 19-year-old University of West Georgia student in Douglas County, Georgia, Douglas County sheriff’s officials said.

The victim, identified as Lyric Farley, a Carrollton High School graduate and UWG student, was shot and killed Saturday night in an incident that remains under investigation, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies took 21-year-old Michael Williams into custody in connection with the shooting. Law enforcement did not immediately release details of the charges against Williams or a possible motive, and it was not clear whether he has retained an attorney who could comment on the case.

The shooting has shaken the campus community, prompting an outpouring of grief from classmates and faculty. University officials offered condolences to Farley’s family and said counseling services are available to students.

Williams was booked into the Douglas County Jail. Additional charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continues, sheriff’s officials said
