82 DeKalb Fire Recruits Get 2-Week Notices

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- All 82 DeKalb County fire recruits have been let go due to budget cuts, Channel 2 confirmed.

On Monday, the recruits got two-week notices. Some of them were set to graduate next month.

Channel 2’s John Bachman spoke with DeKalb County’s fire chief, who said he needed to cut $7 million from his budget.

Fire Chief Edward O'Brien said issuing the notices was tough.

"Walking in there this moing to tell 82 of them they're going to lose their jobs is probably going to be one of the toughest tasks I ever have as a fire chief. It's been a long day," said O'Brien.

O'Brien said the department will outsource its ambulance service and move the firefighters who staffed ambulances to trucks so the end result will mean the same number of firefighters.
