LITHONIA, Ga. - Police say a 7-year-old DeKalb County child was killed Saturday when she got her hands on a gun and accidentally shot herself. Investigators say the weapon belonged to the girl’s mother.

According to authorities, the child was alone in an upstairs bedroom in the home when the gun went off.  They say the young girl was hit in the face by a bullet.

Police questioned those inside the home.  They say those who were home at the time rushed the girl to a nearby hospital, but she did not survive her injuries.

Police say they don't plan to file charges in the case.
