MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SERVICE SUMMIT FREEDOM RALLY HOSTED BY HANDS ON ATLANTA
Monday, January 17, 2011 – 7:30am – until - FREE Open to the Public Hands On Atlanta youth and family volunteers take a day on, not a day off every King Holiday during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit. The day begins with the Freedom Rally, a civic education forum, where participants lea from veteran and contemporary civil rights activists. The Hands on Atlanta day of service immediately follows the rally, where volunteers get involved in dozens of service projects at sites that have significance to Atlanta’s civil rights movement. The Commemorative Service is the spiritual hallmark of the King Holiday Observance, and features tributes to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from national and inteational leaders. Also included is a 12’ x 19’ JumboTron which will broadcast the Commemorative Service live. It will be positioned in front of the Martin Luther King Historic Site Rose Garden for visitors in the Historic District. CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES—SUSTAINING FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Monday, January 17, 2011 King Center Plaza and Truly Living Well Urban Garden Center – 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. FREE Open to the Public
Join the urban gardening community service project to help create an urban garden fruit orchard to promote sustainable communities. A day long environmental stewardship activity has been designed to engage the entire family in interactive energy and water conservation, recycling, green jobs and business development. The activities will include the installation of water conservation and energy devices, compact fluorescent light bulbs exchange and pledge, develop and deployment of waste recycling systems. These activities are in direct alignment with the Mayor Kasim Reed’s 2010 Sustainability Plan to ensure that the City of Atlanta becomes one of the top ten sustainable cities in the country. The project involves: planting nearly 100 fruit trees ( apple, pear, cherry, peach etc) planting nearly 200 seedlings for vegetables of all sorts ( cabbage, greens, tuips, peas etc) collecting hundreds of pounds of recyclable materials
Hosted by The Center for Sustainable Communities in collaboration with Southe Company/Georgia Power, Atlanta Urban League, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), City of Atlanta Water Shed Development—Water Efficiency Division, Sustainable Atlanta, HTS Enterprises and the Truly Living Well –Center for Natural Urban Agriculture.

Dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Mural
Mayor Kasim Reed and other speakers will dedicate a 125-foot mural designed by artist Louis Delsarte and painted with the help of volunteers. The dedication will be followed by a reception.

Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Commemorative Service
Princeton University scholar Coel West gives the keynote address at this service, along with guests Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, Mayor Kasim Reed, King Center Vice Chair/Treasurer Christine King Farris and Elder Beice King. The service will be broadcast live outside on a 12 by 19 foot screen.

Open house for Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birth Home
Tour King’s Old Fourth Ward birth home. Meet with National Park Service rangers at the steps and walking through the house where King lived for the first 12 years of his life.

Annual King Summit Freedom Rally and Service Day
The annual Hands on Atlanta service summit features a conversation between Congressman John Lewis and Doug Shipman, executive diretor of the Center for Civil and Human Rights Partnership. The summit is followed by a day of volunteer projects hosted by Hands on Atlanta.

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday March and Rally
The annual March is held on Aubu Avenue from Peachtree Street to Jackson Street. The rally is held on Aubu Avenue around the King National Historic Site. The parade route will be closed to traffic.
