Two police officers James Wynn and William Patterson shot in Middle Georgia, suspect killed
CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ga. - Two Byron police officers were shot early Monday while serving a search warrant at a home in Crawford County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The officers were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover, authorities said.
According to G.B.I. Special Agent J.T. Ricketson, Officer James Wynn and Officer William Patterson, from the Byron Police Department, were part of a multi-county drug task force.
The task force was serving a warrant at a home along Georgia Highway 42 when the shooting happened around 2:15 a.m. Monday.
Authorities said officers knocked on the door. When no one answered, they entered the home and two were shot by asuspect. Officers retued fire, and the suspect was also shot in the gun battle.
The GBI said the suspect was killed. Monday moing, he was described only as a 35-year-old white male. The suspect's girlfriend and baby were also inside the home when the shooting happened. Neither of them were injured.
Both officers were taken to an area hospital. William Patterson, 26, has been released after sustaining non life-threatening injuries, while the other officer, 27-year-old James Wynn, underwent surgery after being shot in the upper arm and torso area. He is said to be in stable condition after shotgun pellets were removed from his shoulder.
The GBI said illegal drugs were found in the home and have taken control of the shooting scene and is handling the investigation.
