Trial for Man Accused of Killing Lithonia Woman
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A man accused of gunning down a mother of four in DeKalb County is expected to face a judge Thursday.
Opening statements begin in the trial of Luis Alberto Porras.
Prosecutors say Porras shot and killed Jameelah Qureshi, 40, while she sat in a car at her home in Lithonia. It happened back in August 2009. Qureshi shared her home with her fiancee, a DeKalb County police sergeant. She was a key witness in a statutory rape charge Porras had faced.
After Porras was arrested FOX 5 News leaed Qureshi had gone to two different police departments to report the suspect.
The first case took place in 2005 when Porras was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a Stephenson High School minor. He was never indicted on those counts.
Then in 2008 Porras was accused of statutory rape involving a 15-year-old girl who was assaulted in a Roswell home. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight years probation with no jail time.
This isn't the first time Porras has been charged with murder. In 2004 the then 19-year-old was arrested by Alpharetta police in connection with the death of a man Porras claimed was his friend. That case ended up being dropped by the D.A.'s office.
Porras was arrested for the Qureshi murder when police surrounded his parent's Roswell home.
Another suspect in the case, Amanda Dove, is still awaiting trial.
