Tom Petty files legal action to stop Michele Bachmann from using his song in campaign
Tom Petty is reportedly sending a cease-and-desist letter to presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann over her use of the song 'American Girl'.

Tom Petty obviously doesn't think Michele Bachmann is his brand of "American Girl."

The classic rock singer is in the process of sending a cease-and-desist letter to the Republican presidential candidate after she used his 1977 hit at a rally Monday, as first reported by NBC.

The Minnesota congresswomen exited the stage to the song after officially kicking off her campaign in Waterloo, Iowa.

This is not the first time Petty has demanded a politician to stop using his music.

The singer sent a similar letter to former Republican President George W. Bush in 2000 when he played "I Won't Back Down" at stops on his campaign trail.

Petty's legal action may have a political leaning, however.

Hilary Clinton played "American Girl" at several rallys during her 2008 run for the Democratic presidential nomination -- and she never received a complaint.

Bachmann's press office did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
