The iconic work has been in an M&M's commercial, parodied by "The Simpsons" and stolen, twice. Now, the only privately owned version of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" is headed for the auction block at Sotheby's, where it's expected to bring an appropriately jaw-dropping $80 million.

According to MSNBC, the auction house described the artwork as "one of the most instantly recognizable images in art and popular culture, second only perhaps to Da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa'." The frame holding this version of the 1895 work has Munch's handwritten inscription, the final line of which reads "I felt the great Scream in Nature."

Is 'The Scream' worth $80 million?
