An 18-year-old Texas man is accused of fatally shooting his longtime friend in the head after an argument over French fries, authorities said.

Lemarques Darden Jr., 18, was arrested and charged with murder in the death of Jarvis Davis, 19, following the Jan. 28 shooting in Fort Worth, according to Tarrant County officials.

Police said Darden and Davis had returned to an apartment with a group of friends, including Davis’ girlfriend, after picking up food from a nearby Wingstop when the dispute escalated. Witnesses told investigators the two began arguing about sharing French fries.

Authorities allege Darden pulled out a handgun and shot Davis in the head after he refused to give him some of the fries.

Davis was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.

Family members said the two young men had grown up together, and at first some believed the confrontation was a joke because it stemmed from what they described as a minor disagreement.

“It’s so senseless,” Sherika Kennedy, Davis’ mother, told Fox News. “Why? My baby thought he was genuinely his friend. My baby wasn’t expecting him to shoot him.”

Kennedy said her son’s girlfriend was sitting on his lap when the gun went off.

Darden is being held in the Tarrant County Jail and is awaiting a trial date. His attorney did not immediately provide a comment when contacted by local media.

The investigation remains ongoing.
