Teacher suspended for playing song supporting gay marriage in class
Susan Johnson, Michicgan middle school teacher, suspended for playing song about gay marriage

Rapper Macklemore’s song "Same Love" is an ode to marriage equality, and for Susan Johnson, a performing arts teacher at Centennial Middle School in South Lyon, Mich., allowing a student to play it in class was an opportunity to teach the importance of tolerance and diversity. But not everyone saw it that way. After another student complained about the song's lyrics, which discuss homosexuality, politics and religion, Johnson was suspended for three days.

The school district argued that the song contained controversial content, and that Johnson should have sought permission to play the song. "I really love my kids and I never want to hurt them, but … I want the kids to feel comfortable in my class no matter who they are," Johnson said.
