Study tracks which cars appeal to Republicans and Democrats
2011 Ford Mustang convertible, the top model preferred by self-identified Republicans in a survey conducted by Strategic Vision.

The humorist Will Stanton summed up our political parties this way: "Republicans raise dahlias, Dalmatians and eyebrows. Democrats raise Airedales, kids and taxes." It tus out the two are miles apart, too, when it comes to cars.

A consumer study including 38,000 people and based on retail sales of 2011 and 2012 models found that the Ford Mustang convertible, Audi A8 sedan and Mercedes GL-Class are big hits with Republicans, while Democrats are partial to the Honda Civic Hybrid, Volvo C30 and Nissan Leaf.

It's not clear how the results will actually be useful; probably anticipating the loaded questions that inevitably come with political studies, the president of the AMCI automotive consulting agency advised manufacturers "not to touch the results with a 10-foot pole."
