Students Pay Tribute to Accident Victim
There was a special tribute today for a victim of the deadly Easter Sunday wreck in south Fulton County.
Students at Stonewall Tell Elementary School planted a memorial "reading garden" in Kayla Lemons' honor. Lemons was among five people killed by a hit and run driver last month on Camp Creek Parkway.
"It's been pretty hard coming to school and not seeing Kayla, wave at everybody in the hallway," said classmate Brittiany Royster
Morgan Johnson, 6, who was riding in another car, was also killed in the wreck; her mother was critically injured.
"We really wanted to be here today to just try and give back any way we could for the family and our heart does go out to the family," said parent, Latika Taitt-Ireland.
Kayla's death was difficult for students and staff, who miss the third grader's bright smile and kind spirit.
"She was happy and when someone was sad she would comfort them and make them a whole lot better," said Royster.
The student council spearheading the project decided on a reading garden because Kayla loved books.
"She would say, 'Wow. All of this for me? You guys are so nice,'" said Royster.
People who knew Kayla say its part of the healing process.
"Once we got the garden started, I think it helped with the healing with the students. They are involved in planning, planting the garden," said teacher, Annie Osby.
Aimee Michael, 22, is charged with vehicular homicide. Police said she caused the deadly wreck, fled the scene and later concealed the crime. Her mother, Sheila Michael, is charged with evidence tampering in the case.
