The following statement was released Tuesday by the King family, according to U.S. Newswire:
"Mrs. Coretta Scott King, first lady of human and civil rights, died (overnight). Mrs. King, wife of slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was 78.
"We appreciate the prayers and condolence from people across the country."
The funeral arrangements will be made public once finalized.
