Spotify US Launch Coming--But CEO Won't Say When

SAN FRANCISCO — Streaming music service Spotify will launch in the U.S., but its CEO won't say when.

Spotify CEO and co-founder Daniel Ek says the problem is partly that Spotify is not just a technology company that needs to build and release its product. It also has to make complex deals with recording companies. When it launches, it will cost $10 a month in the U.S.

The London-based service is available in the U.K. and several other European countries. The free service comes with ads and gives users access to 20 hours of music monthly. Its subscription service, which carries no ads, allows unlimited listening and the ability to download songs to their phone.

Ek spoke Tuesday at the D: Dive Into Mobile tech conference Tuesday hosted by tech blog AllThingsD.
