French Authorities Raid Elon Musk’s X Offices in Major Cybercrime Investigation

French cybercrime police, backed by Europol, have conducted a significant raid on the Paris offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X — formerly known as Twitter — as part of a year-long criminal investigation into the company’s operations.

The action, carried out on Tuesday, is connected to an ongoing probe by the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit that initially focused on alleged misuse of X’s algorithms and fraudulent extraction of user data. That inquiry has since broadened following complaints about the behavior of X’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

Authorities now say the investigation includes possible involvement by the platform in distributing material that could violate French law, such as child sexual abuse imagery, sexually explicit deepfakes created without consent, and content denying crimes against humanity. Investigators are also examining claims related to manipulated data processing on X.

As part of the probe, French prosecutors have summoned Elon Musk to voluntarily appear for questioning in April, alongside former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino and several employees.

In a statement posted on X, the Paris prosecutor’s office said its goal is to ensure that the platform complies with French legal standards, noting that X will no longer be used as the office’s primary channel of communication.

X has not publicly responded to the latest developments
