Smithville Man, Tommy Lee Owens,  Drowns in Georgia Pond After Boat Capsizes

SMITHVILLE, Ga. - Authorities say a man drowned when the boat he was in capsized as he fished on a private pond in southwest Georgia.

Lee County Chief Deputy Lewis Harris told WALB that 57-year-old Tommy Lee Owens was pulled from the Smithville pond shortly after it disappeared Saturday afteoon.

Harris says Owens was fishing with 68-year-old Clint James Jackson when they became stuck on a stump. The duo rocked the boat hoping to free it, but the boat capsized.

Harris says Jackson was able to hold onto the boat but Owens could not. Authorities do not believe the men were wearing life vests. Jackson was treated at the hospital and released.
