Slight Warm-Up To Bring Some Relief

ATLANTA -- After oveight temperatures dipped into the teens and 20s across metro Atlanta, black ice complicated Friday commutes. But a gradual warm-up throughout the day was forecasted to bring some relief to residents.

Residents across the region woke up to black ice, which may be tricky because it cannot be seen.

"Anything that melted out there oveight refroze. No doubt about it," Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist David Chandley said.

During the moing commute, residents were cautioned to drive carefully.

”If you saw surface street icing yesterday, you are likely to see it in the same places this moing, Channel 2’s Mark Arum said.

Arum said the area above the Interstate 20 corridor would be especially treacherous. He advised drivers to wait until there was more sunshine, ideally around 10 a.m., to hit the roads.

Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologists brought good news, saying a significant warm-up was headed toward the region. By noon, temperatures were hovering just below the freezing mark.

"It means a lot of folks are going to be able to escape and get out a little bit for today, finally," Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

She said the metro region would see temperatures in the high 30s and 40s.

But Chandley said a total meltdown was still days away. He said ice patches would stay frozen until both the daytime and nighttime temperatures reached above freezing.
