Shock Democratic victory in Colorado Senate race provides rare chink of light for gloomy Obama

The Democrats strengthened their hold over the Senate last night when it was revealed Michael Bennet had managed a surprise win in Colorado.

It was a tiny chink of light for President Obama's party amid the otherwise gloomy mid-term elections on Tuesday.

Bennet's upset win over Republican Ken Buck, the tea party favourite who cast himself as the outsider, came after the nation's most expensive Senate contest.

With 97 per cent of the projected vote counted late last night, Bennet led Buck by about 15,400 votes out of 1.4 million cast.

News of the win came after President Obama admitted the Democrats had suffered a 'shellacking' in U.S. elections

Appearing sombre at a news conference in the White House last night, the President took responsibility for the weak economic recovery, the central issue for many voters.
