All those political rallies and debates already seem a long time ago for 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

The former Massachusetts goveor was caught Monday night doing something all too common to the majority of Americans - even the infamous 47% - when he was photographed filling up one of his cars with gas.

Mitt has suffered a dramatic fall from the public spotlight since his election day defeat and after months of being used to him looking his slickest on the campaign trail it is something of a shock to see him looking so disheveled.

Admittedly he probably wasn’t prepared for the photo, but it is still surprising to see his hair - always looked so immaculate on the campaign trail – looking such a mess.

‘Mitt Romney at my local gas station... he looks tired and washed up,’ wrote mkb95, who posted the photo on Reddit.

The photographer goes on to explain that he ‘talked to him (Romney) for a good three minutes while he was filling his tank,’ and even leaed that he's planning to move ‘to one of his houses’ in La Jolla.

The Romney’s have a $12 million oceanfront mansion in the neighborhood La Jolla, near San Diego.

Mitt and his wife Ann are adjusting to civilian life without the perks that go with running for office. During the presidential campaign, they received 24 hour protection from the U.S. Secret Service but all that stopped the moing after the election.

On Saturday evening the couple were spotted enjoying date night in nearby Del Mar. Grainy photographs show the pair, minus security, heading to the Cinepolis movie theatre to watch the new Twilight film.

They then headed for dinner at Sammy's, a pizza restaurant across the street. Romney was reportedly extremely friendly with fellow diners and even posed for pictures.

As Republican Party start to come to terms with the scale of its election day defeat, the former goveor has become persona non grata to the party at large - a remarkable fall from grace which he is said to be taken aback by.

Romney was widely praise for his gracious concession speech, but divisive comments since then have put him at odds with party leaders.

In a post-election conference call with some of his key donors last Wednesday, Romney said that he had lost because the Obama administration gave 'gift's such as health-care law and immigration reform which attracted young and minority voters.'

'The Obama campaign was following the old playbook of giving a lot of stuff to groups that they hoped they could get to vote for them and be motivated to go out to the polls, specifically the African American community, the Hispanic community and young people,' Romney is reported to have said.

Those remarks are considered divisive by people within the party seeking to rebuild ahead of the 2016 election.

Louisiana Goveor Bobby Jindal, once a close ally of Romney said: ‘I think that’s absolutely wrong. We have got to stop dividing the American voters. We need to go after 100 percent of the votes, not 53 percent. We need to go after every single vote.’
