Polls Open for Runoff Elections

ATLANTA - The polls are open Tuesday in a number of counties for runoff elections.

There are races for mayor, school board, and even a state supreme court justice is to be decided.

State officials are predicting a low voter tuout but polling places are ready no matter how many show up.

Election officials and candidates emphasize while there may be only a handful of races, there's a lot at stake -- including a seat on the state supreme court.

David Nahmias -- who was appointed to the court by goveor Sonny Perdue last year -- spent the day flying across the state Monday for one last push on the campaign trail.

He got 48 percent of the vote in November's election. Thirty-five percent went to Tammy Lynn Adkins – a Lawrenceville family law attoey who didn't spend a penny campaigning for the general election.

"I have a proven record of 20 years in public service as a prosecutor as a law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court as a justice of our supreme court enforcing the law," said David Nahmias.

"I believe my qualities and expertise in the last 18 years representing everyday Georgians as a family lawyer in courtrooms across the state uniquely qualifies me for this seat," said Tammy Lynn Adkins

On the local level, a hot race in DeKalb County for the school board, as the district fights to get itself back on track.

Two incumbents are in a runoff after a year of controversy in the district, including the indictment of former superintendent Dr. Crawford Lewis.

Incumbent Jim Redovin will square off against Nancy Jester.

And current board member Zepora Roberts faces political newcomer Donna Edler.

"It has been a challenging year you have to face these issues as they come up you can't run from them you can't handle these your back bent," said incumbent Zepora Roberts.

"I will understand the issues as they come up, and I think we missed some of that with the current school board," said Donna Edler, a DeKalb School Board candidate

Election officials emphasize the importance of getting voters to the polls. DeKalb County alone is spending a quarter of a million dollars on the run-off.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
