Police: Smyrna woman Jennifer Shipley arrested after lying about kidnapping, rape

Smya police have called off the search for two rape and kidnapping suspects after uncovering new evidence about a woman who claimed to be their victim.

The woman initially told police that she had been walking on along Windy Hill Road near S. Cobb Drive on Jan. 17, when she was forced into a Chevy Caprice at gunpoint.

According to the woman, two men had taken her to an unknown location, where she was beaten and raped.  She was held there against her will for two days, but was eventually allowed to go free.

In mid-February, police released sketches of the two suspects to the media, hoping to gain leads in the case, as it was going cold. At the time, investigators believed the attack on the woman was random.

But Friday, police announced they had arrested the woman, 32-year-old Jennifer Marie Shipley, and called off the search for the suspects.

According to a spokesman with the Smya Police Department, investigators had found evidence that lead them to believe Shipley had lied about the ordeal.

Shipley was charged with making false statements, and taken to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Police did not release any information about her bond.
