Canton police said an armed man inside a Marietta Highway K-Mart bathroom was shot by responding officers Saturday.

Investigators said the incident started at about 11 a.m. when a suspicious man, leaning against a wall inside the K-Mart bathroom, was unresponsive to people asking if he was all right.

When police arrived at the scene and went inside the bathroom, they discovered that the man was armed. During the incident, the man was shot. No officers were injured.

"We came to the scene and you could hear the supervisor getting people out of the building. They were trying to find out what was going on with the guy, trying to get customers out. That's when you heard over the radio that shots were fired," said Canton Police Cpl. Stacy Bailey.

Police said the man has been identified as 65-year-old Raymond Sweat. Authorities said Sweat was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Police said no customers were hurt during the incident.

Investigators are not exactly saying what prompted officers to open fire.

The Cherokee County Sheriffs Office has taken over the investigation.
