Police: Domestic shooting leaves wife Melissa Kelly dead, husband Alton Kelly in critical condition
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – A wife is dead and her husband is in critical condition in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide attempt Monday moing in Gwinnett County.
Gwinnett Police rushed to a home on Bridge Walk Drive in unincorporated Lawrenceville about 5:30 a.m. after a 911 call about a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Alton Kelly, 53, and his wife, 45-year-old Melissa Kelly, both unconscious with gunshot wounds.
They were both rushed to Gwinnett Medical Center where Melissa died from her injuries. Her husband Alton is still listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said initial evidence shows Alton shot his wife, Melissa, possibly multiple times, before tuing the gun on himself while trying to commit suicide.
Three family members, including a child, were inside the home when the shooting happened. None of them suffered any injuries, according to investigators.
Police aren't sure what triggered the violence, but said officers have responded to the home on multiple domestic calls within the last week, including two separate domestic-related calls at the home on Saturday.
