Police: 65 detained in connection with gambling operation at Pepperoni's Tavern in Alpharetta
Police said 65 people were detained at Pepperoni's Tavern in Alpharetta

Alpharetta Police busted what they call the largest gambling operation in the city's history.

Law enforcement from Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, and Roswell all took part in the raid at Pepperoni's Tave on Old Milton Parkway. Police say 65 people were inside the restaurant, including employees and the owner.  A large amount of cash and a few handguns were confiscated.

A total of 23 were arrested and hauled off to jail. They'll likely face illegal gambling and possible weapons charges. We're told more arrests could be made later.

Investigators tell reporters the operation centered around the upcoming NCAA Men's Basketball Touament, with bets being made on games.  A sign in the front of the restaurant says it would be closed for a private party, during which police say the alleged gambling was scheduled to take place.

The Pepperoni's website advertises a March Madness contest promising free food and drinks to the winners.  That same site says the restaurant originally opened in 1997 in Duluth.  The small chain has 3 locations the first store, the one in Alpharetta and one in Charlotte North Carolina.
